Uncertainty about what the intentions are for this decorative low stone wall separating the pedestrian area and the road is no longer — the NZTA/Council want to remove it because it will interfere with their desired ‘Politically Correct’ cycleway!
It only runs about 50 metres from the entrance to Mahara Place and the premises at number 40, just to the south of the Frater Lane entrance.
How many cyclists actually use the Main Road — and how many would if the exalted cycleway was in place?
The first is easy to answer — hardly any; and we submit that would still be the case if the venerated cycle lane was there. Main Roads are just not appealing places to cycle!
It seems from the plans that the trees would stay at least, but it’s possible that they would get moved too.
