Freshly arrived from English Electric’s works in Preston, England, the first member of what was designated the Df class sits on a siding at Waikanae. This may be have been the end point of a test run from Wellington, or just a stop on its delivery to the Auckland/Bay of Plenty regions. This class was rarely seen south of Hamilton.
Only 10 were built which was a good thing as “the DFs were unreliable and needed frequent repairs.” (Wikipedia) The last was withdrawn from use in 1975. One is preserved at Ferrymead Historic Park in Christchurch.
