There is a big difference in location, of course, but an interesting one.  In L.A. and America generally, rentals are quoted per month; in Waikanae and NZ generally, per week.  So $NZ 600 a week equates to about $US 1,700 a month at the present exchange rate (1.50:1).

First in Waikanae: It will get you this newly built house in Pohe St, Waikanae North: 3 bedrooms with a single garage and a very small yard front and back. www.bookaviewing.net.nz

Second in Los Angeles: According to this article in LA Curbed that amount will get you a one-bedroom apartment or a studio apartment.  According to this webpage: “The cost of living is 43.3 percent above the [US] national average in Los Angeles.” However, average salaries are high by NZ standards: see this listing from last November.LA Screen_Shot_2019_06_05_at_7.28.07_AM

With that value for money — or lack thereof — it should be no surprise there is this article in today’s L.A. Times which states that despite the strong American economy, the number of homeless in L.A. County, which has a population of about 10.2 million, is now close to 59,000 which is 11% up on last year — although that’s still proportionately well down on what it is now in Jacindaland.
