Apihaka Tamati Mack of the Ngātiawa ki Kapiti iwi has sent us these two maps, which are part of the basis for their Waitangi Tribunal claim. She says: “The red marks on the top map show the original boundaries. From Wharemaku Rd to Paekakariki was given to Ngati Toa. From Kukutaiaki Stream to Otaki river was given to Raukawa by the Government when Wi Parata was in Parliament.” The bottom map is from 1890. As can be seen the changes were quite substantial, and extend well into the Akatawara Range.
She adds: “Ngātiawa Wai 1018 claimants have accepted invitations to speak with Te Mangai Kahui – TPK and Te Arawhiti — to begin inclusion, acknowledgment and conversations addressing Wai 1018 claim injustices.”
