The steel support brackets have been attached to the bridge — and that’s all (click for full view). Unlike south of here on the Main Road which sees very few cyclists, this bridge is used quite a bit by cyclists who go up one bank of the river, cross over and go down the other bank.

There is one of these on the bridge over the Wairau just north of Blenheim. I drive across the Wairau bridge very often and I have yet to see a single cyclist using the new, no doubt very expensive, cycle bridge. Mind you I hardly ever saw a cyclist crossing the river on the road bridge either.
