Those who have traveled through Germany know that the big cities are for the most part bland and boring. That’s because they were substantially bombed to rubble over 1943 to 1945, mostly by the British and Americans, alternating between night and day; the British at night and the Americans during the day. City vistas that had been created over hundreds of years were destroyed in hours.
After the war in the 1950s there was little priority given to restoring iconic buildings, rather it was all about building modern ones, quickly.
