Had a lesson in this the other night at the Our Big Ideas at the Bowling Club at Raumati Beach.
The meeting was hosted by Sophie Handford and Bede Laracy who talked about the vision for the area.
It was a real sales job about having markets, activities for teenagers, cafe culture, safer walking and cycling, affordable housing, cycle lanes, safer crossings and intersections et cetera.
People were given poster handouts and 3M pads to write down what they found to be good and bad about such proposals and a discussion emerged about what people would like to have.
There were a lot of suggestions for nice to haves but I don’t know how any of these projects would ever be funded without absolutely rooking residents through rates.
People raised points about rack, stack and pack housing and no real greenery or open spaces nearby. Other points raised were that there appeared to be a war on cars and how this may discourage visitors to the region as well as disadvantage the elderly and disabled.
Of course the elephant in the room was the 15-minute city, and when this was raised a man at the front yelled out that this was a conspiracy theory; he was met with deserved spirited pushback.
In the audience were ward councillors and community board members from the council, and the MP for Mana Barbara Edmonds. They are obviously testing the water and trying to get people to participate in their own enslavement by stealth.
Other meetings are likely planned around the country. Ms Edmonds had her photo taken with the presenters at the meeting.
Interesting take on the Meeting , I think the Author hasn’t taken the time to get an understanding of the kaupapa here. The last two paragraphs make no sense to me at all considering this is a personal initiative by 2 local leaders that are elected representatives and is specific to Raumati only.It is not a community board or council initiative. Yes it is a vision discussion, who mentioned rates funding ? No road trip planned and love the reference to enslavement. My message back , feel free not to participate rather than throw stones due to a lack of understanding. Have a great day and onwards and upwards with the great work Bede and Sophie.
