For politics nerds like myself, scanning through individual constituency results in elections is an interesting exercise because of what it reveals about the make-up of the areas.
Traditionally, the most popular political leanings are a reflection of affluence and impoverishment. But not so much now in Britain, when the Conservatives have managed to Stuff the economy up as much as Labour ever did, have allowed a virulent war on Free Speech and allowed unfettered Wokeism.
Areas most adversely affected by massive immigration, both legal and illegal, shifted big time to Reform.
But what of the UK’s status as a staunch ally of whatever the Washington warmongers decide to do, including Blinken and Biden’s wars in Gaza and Ukraine? The answer seems to be it did impact in some places. In Dewsbury and Batley, considered the highest Muslim dominated cities in Britain, the seat was won, not too surprisingly, by a Muslim independent (result above). The Conservative candidate was beaten into 4th place below Reform. The notorious anti-semite Jeremy Corbyn was comfortably reelected as an independent in Islington North.
In Welwyn Hatfield the cabinet minister-Secretary of Defence, Grant Shapps, lost his seat to the Labour Candidate. In his losing speech at the results declaration, he said “I am extremely concerned that unless [the new cabinet] quickly commit to spend 2.5% of GDP [on the military] our armed forces may suffer.” So? Which historical foe does he think plans to invade? The Spanish? The French? The Germans? Does he really mean that Britain needs armed forces to keep the wogs in the colonies under control? Sorry, chum, the British Empire disintegrated after World War 2.
But no, silly, it’s the Russians! He added, “and so will our friends in Ukraine [suffer] and their democracy.” Golly, that bunch of ultra-corrupt thugs in charge of Ukraine are the Conservatives’ friends? And what democracy does Ukraine have? It most definitely is not a democracy. But he needn’t worry, Keir Starmer will be another Tony Blair as far as pro-American warmongering goes.
