According to this article by the Stuffers, “All of the community papers are North Island titles, and they are expected to be closed before Christmas this year. This would leave some regions without a source of local news.”

As well as the Kapiti News, the Horowhenua Chronicle is on the list.

“NZME said in an announcement on Thursday that it had presented a proposal to staff to close the papers on the basis they were no longer profitable.”

Given that Kapiti News only has an editorial staff of two, David Haxton and a sidekick, it surprises us that it’s not profitable. The production work and advertising sales would be done centrally. —Eds
