Last Thursday [NZ time], Donald Trump played South African President Cyril Ramaphosa a confronting video and handed him a stack of printed news articles that claim to portray white South Africans being persecuted.
Mr Ramaphosa visited the US President in Washington DC on Wednesday US time hoping to discuss trade, bringing a delegation that included popular white South African golfers.
But the Oval Office meeting between the two presidents took a turn after Mr Trump began listing concerns about the treatment of white people in the African country and played a video showing white crosses that he said marked the graves of white people.
“We have many people that feel they’re being persecuted, and they’re coming to the United States. So we take from many … locations, if we feel there’s persecution or genocide going on,” Mr Trump said, referring to white South African farmers.
“People are fleeing South Africa for their own safety. Their land is being confiscated, and in many cases, they’re being killed.”
The president of the African country pushed back against the claims, pointing to the presence of golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen and billionaire Johann Rupert in the room.
“If there was Afrikaner farmer genocide, I can bet you, these three gentleman would not be here,” Mr Ramaphosa said, referring to the three men.
The US president then told Mr Ramaphosa “we have thousands of stories talking about it” before playing the video on a television screen at the back of the room and saying, “it has to be responded to”.
