Regulatory Standards Bill submissions close at 1 pm next Monday and Te Pāti Māori activists are mobilising against the Bill based on falsehoods spread by the Party and its proxies. I’m asking you to make a short submission in support of the bill.

Many everyday problems arise, at least in part, from red tape. Groceries are made more expensive because restrictive planning and overseas investment rules block new competition. Power bills are too high because it’s too hard to get permission for new generation.

Housing is so expensive and takes so long to build because of the piles of paperwork and approvals necessary just to get permission to get started.

Bad regulations have stacked up like lasagne and smothered our ability to get anything done affordably or quickly.

Infrastructure projects and smart business ideas get left on the drawing board, because talented Kiwis look at all the rules and just don’t bother

Dopey rules make us poorer. Worse, they suck creativity and joy out of life.

The Regulatory Standards Bill is currently open for public submissions, and I’m asking you to show your support.

What the Regulatory Standards Bill does

The Regulatory Standards Bill introduces clear principles of good law-making – like transparency, accountability, and respect for property rights – to ensure politicians justify new regulations and their impact on your life.

By establishing a Regulatory Standards Board, we’ll hold lawmakers accountable, making it easier for you to run your business, develop your property, or simply live without bureaucratic overreach.

The Bill won’t take away Parliament’s power to regulate. But it will force them to answer basic questions, like:

  • What problem are we trying to solve?
  • What are the costs and benefits?
  • Who pays the costs and gets the benefits?

You can find a more detailed explainer of the Bill here.

The Opposition is mobilising. As you read this, Te Pāti Māori (and the Temu version, Toitū Te Tiriti) are rallying their supporters to flood the Finance and Expenditure Committee with submissions against the Regulatory Standards Bill.

They have spread misinformation in an effort to rile up their activists, grow their email lists, and garner donations.

They claim the bill undermines the Treaty of Waitangi, because it doesn’t require lawmakers to put a Treaty lens over everything they do.

The Opposition would happily sacrifice smarter regulation at the altar of Treaty ideology. We can’t let them.

Will you make a submission in support of the Regulatory Standards Bill today?

MAKE A SUBMISSION

Your submission doesn’t need to be long. Just share your views, share your support, and share your experience – whether it’s a business idea stifled by bureaucracy, a building project delayed by red tape, or an employment relationship drowned in paperwork. I’ve put some tips at the bottom of this email for how to make an effective submission.

Submissions close at 1 pm on 23 June 2025.
