From Monday 7 July, we will be carrying out essential work on the ‘gravel island’ in the Waikanae River in the scientific reserve downstream from Otaihanga Boat Club.

Visitors may see machinery in the river over a 1–2 week period, and we want to explain why.

Over time, gravel has built up in the river, pushing the water flow against the northern bank, causing erosion. If left unchecked, this erosion could further threaten the walking track, natural habitat, and nearby infrastructure.

After careful planning with Ātiawa ki Whakarongotai, DOC, and others, we’ll move the flow back to the middle of the river, and use the gravel material to reshape the river banks.

Fish will be safely relocated before work begins, and eventually native plants will be planted to restore the banks.

For safety, parts of the Waikanae River Trail on the northern bank may be closed during the later stages of work. Please follow signage and keep clear of machinery.
