Hernando de Soto was a 16th-century Spanish explorer and conquistador, and his name was given to a division of Chrysler from 1928 to 1961. Positioned between Plymouth and Dodge, it was a viable make until the late 1950s. The toothy look of the Firedome first appeared in 1951. Above is a 1953 DeSoto Firedome, below a 1955 model, after which the teeth disappeared.
