The government has spent more than $21 million on 35 new homes that sit empty more than a year after completion.
The townhouses are in Waikanae on the Kāpiti Coast, part of a 39-home development, pushed through “with urgency” as one resident described it.
The project, on Utauta St, was finished last year under new rules that allow for greater intensification.
The site is about 250 metres from the town’s railway station and opposite Waikanae primary school.
When Stuff visited, we found rows of empty properties fitted out with new appliances and carpets, with neat planting outside.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development owns 35 of the homes and is trying to find buyers.
Initially, it bought 10 under its Build Ready Development scheme, designed to help get stalled housing projects off the ground in high-need areas.

The big reason why they haven’t sold, apart from being overpriced, is that no-one normal wants to live next to riff-raff who do drink, drugs and loud noise at best, harrassment and abuse at worst.
