Netflix has canceled Boots after one season. The decision is less surprising than it might seem. The series was presented as a historical coming-of-age drama about homosexuality in the US military in the 1990s, but it degenerated into what the Pentagon aptly described as “Woke garbage.” This assessment came not from an anonymous critic, but directly from the US Department of Defense.

Boots is based on the book The Pink Marine by Greg Cope White and follows Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, during his training in the Marine Corps. The series purports to tell a personal and historical story, but from the very first episode, it adopts a distinctly ideological perspective. The US military primarily serves as a backdrop for contemporary identity politics.

This is precisely what the Pentagon objected to. In a statement, spokesman Kingsley Wilson said: “Under President Trump and Secretary Pete Hegseth, the U.S. Army is returning to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards are elite, uniformed, and gender-neutral across the board, because the weight of a backpack or a human body doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, gay or straight.”
