Although the word goes back some decades meaning ‘putting things back into order’, this use of it was famously coined in 2008 by Barry Bateman, a former airport director at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport. He added a playful touch to air travel by installing official signs marking a “Recombobulation Area” just past TSA checkpoints, where passengers can gather themselves, put their shoes back on, and repack their bags.
