Takatāpui –a traditional Māori term meaning an intimate companion of the same sex, which has been reclaimed as an umbrella identity for Māori who are queer, transgender, intersex, or part of rainbow communities.

There is even a stylised Wokeist flag, but only for use by those with the prerequiste bloodlines of course.

Last week I encountered this word in a new TVNZ documentary entitled ‘What’s happened to sex?’ which I assumed meant a decline in the frequency of people engaging in it because of anxiety and depression. But it was about the recent (I assume) increased indulgence in rough sex, particularly choking (sexual strangulation or erotic asphyxiation which causes some sort of high from reduced oxygen and blood flow to the brain — see here). Thus is medically very dangerous and I share the concern about it.

But what’s with the Wokeist need to create another ‘Alphabet people’ term specifically for Maori? Isn’t there a risk for them of ‘LGBT’ in NZ meaning ‘Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Takatapui’ omitting the much revered ‘transsexual’?
