The Marché des Enfants Rouges, the oldest covered food market in Paris, was destroyed by a fire on Monday, 12 October. It required around 150 firefighters to contain the blaze, with no serious injuries reported.
Fire official Lt. Col. Pierre de Bouvier said the fire had consumed around 1,000 square metres of the market when the department arrived. He said, “Nothing remains,” as the market’s stalls and part of its metal structure were destroyed. Firefighters allowed the fire to burn in the centre of the market to protect nearby buildings.
City officials plan to find temporary locations for affected vendors as investigators determine the fire’s cause.
