Last Saturday morning we called in to see the open day which seemed well attended.
The most prominent thing that MenzShed has done is probably the restoration of the U.S. Marines hut in QEII park which was dedicated on U.S. Memorial Day last year (see the post at the time.)
Things they are actively involved with include making nest boxes for bees and kaka birds as well as building rat and possum traps. Kindergartens in Waikanae have also been the recipients of creations from the MenzShed.
Member Brian Skipper says the group began 8 years ago with 30 members and now has twice that. “There are about 75 members on the books, but some drop off.” Which means they cease to be around and replacements are needed.
Do wives ever show up? “Only with scones. The name is clear: Men’s Shed.”
From the shortage of space in the existing sheds, it was pretty obvious why they need a bigger purpose-designed building.
Membership is $25 a year; Geoffrey has sent in his application.
