Queensland has now joined the covid pandemic club after opening its borders in mid-December. Before then, figures in Queensland were tiny. Queensland has about 13,000 beds in public hospitals, and in 2018 had 413 ICU beds; that figure is presumably higher now. Clearly these figures are easily within the system’s capacity. Whether that continues to be the case remains to be seen. But as we’ve seen in NZ, nearly all hospitalisations are likely to be people with serious existing conditions and may well have had to be put there regardless.
