One feature of the Scientific Reserve sandspit is, or at least was, the patterns in the sand created by winds in different directions and we’ve posted a number of evening photos of them over the last several months.

The deluge last week caused a substantial amount of river water to flow over it, as shown in this Joshua Hay photo from the air posted on the Kapiti Coast community FB Page.

The water has now subsided and the full spit is back, but the sand is now very smooth.

Around the bases of the sand dunes, sand has been redistributed so that little sand walls have been created. In places roots of the grasses have been exposed. But in due course the sand slopes will reappear, it will just take a few months. The same applies to the ripples and undulations along the spit.
