On the subject of the NZTA/KCDC Waikanae bridge clip-on shemozzle, reader Gerard Black sent us this screenshot of his response to someone on the Kapiti Coast page.

It’s one of the reasons why people choose not to bother with Facebook (and none of our editorial group except Geoffrey do) — you have to expect halfwits, trolls and Labour Party types in social media, often using fake accounts when they’re being trolls. There are mixed views about them — while irritating, they can also pique interest in what is linked to.
In this example ‘Joshua Martin’ sounds like a public servant, and perhaps even works in the NZTA. The common stance from senior bureaucrats in both central and local government is: “we know what’s best for you peasants, we don’t make mistakes and if there are mistakes it’s not our fault and it’s not our concern how much money has been wasted. So keep quiet and go away and make no more fuss.”
‘Joshua Martin’ is just the sort of elected member that unelected bureaucrats love: a ‘rubber stamper’ who has no interest in asking hard questions, let alone holding unelected council employees to account.
Did ‘they’ consider closing the bridge completely for a couple of weeks or so and working 24/7 to complete the job as other countries seem to manage?????
The west-side lane of the bridge is closed 24/7. Perhaps you mean increasing the number of workers with floodlights for use at night? In that case it would be done in a couple of weeks, max.
