As the fallout from the latest Police leadership controversy deepens, Hipkins has been quick to pretend he’s got nothing to do with it. The reality is far different. Hipkins personally approved the appointment of former disgraced Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming.
It was Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern who signed off on the appointment of former Police Commissioner Andrew Coster, with then Police Minister Chris Hipkins nodding along in agreement. The same Hipkins now attempting to distance himself from the very structure he helped build.
When things were going well, he was front and centre, eager to claim credit. Now that the rot has been exposed, he’s nowhere to be seen. The leadership failures of the New Zealand Police under Coster and McSkimming didn’t happen in a vacuum. They were the product of political decisions, Chris Hipkins decisions.
For a man who built his brand on “accountability,” it’s remarkable how allergic Chris Hipkins becomes to responsibility when it finally comes knocking.

It will be remembered the Leftist Legacy Media, particularly the Stuffers, rejoiced in the violence Coster unleashed on the anti-mandate protesters outside parliament in February/March 2022 — which was just one of many cases of his persecuting Jacinda regime opponents. Most Kiwi Police are trying to do the job they were employed to do. Unfortunately when Tarrant went on the rampage at CH-CH Mosque killing spree after the NZ Police gave him a firearms licence without proper back ground checks all NZ Licensed firearms holder got treated like third rate criminal citizens. Then then the anti vax protesters were given a riot control clean out down at the parliamentary grounds in Wellington. Now a hundred or so NZ Police falsified breath tests as to keep their traffic violation quota up and now the top knobs are being investigated for the latest debacle. Know wonder most NZ citizens have lost all faith and credibility with the NZ Police.
