It’s been a slow day but enlightening 🇳🇿🇺🇦 AN INTERESTING NZ–UKRAINE TIMELINE
I’ve been doing some digging through OFFICIAL New Zealand Government documents concerning our funding and military support for Ukraine, and the chronology is rather interesting.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February 2022.
But released MFAT records show that NZ officials had already been preparing possible responses before the invasion:
• 3 December 2021 — “Escalating tensions in Ukraine”
• 28 January 2022 — “Ukraine-Russia – New Zealand’s response to the mounting crisis”
• 10 February 2022 — “Russia-Ukraine – Proposed timeline of responses in the event of Russian military action”
Then, after the invasion:
• 15 March — NZ officials consider military options to support Ukraine.
• 21 March — “Possible Materiel Support for Assistance to Ukraine.”
• 28 March — Cabinet considers NZDF options.
• 4 April — further military-support options are considered.
• 11 April — the NZ Government announces NZ$7.5 MILLION for weapons and ammunition procurement through the United Kingdom.
That was just 46 DAYS after the full-scale invasion began.
The 21 March NZDF paper is particularly interesting because it says that purchasing materiel through partner nations or the NATO Trust Fund was likely to be the most practicable and expedient way of providing assistance.
Official records subsequently confirm that the NZ$7.5 million was PAID TO UK MOD and that the purchase of materiel was confirmed with the UK.
So here’s the question I’m interested in:
WHAT EXACTLY WAS BOUGHT WITH OUR NZ$7.5 MILLION?
Who supplied it? Who was paid? And how did the UK procurement arrangement develop?
I’m continuing to follow the documentary trail.
No need for rumours or conspiracy theories. These dates and descriptions come from released New Zealand Government records.
