The Kapiti Coast District Council should stop playing games and start embracing public participation and transparency, according to Paekakariki-Raumati Ward candidate Guy Burns.
“Like many Kapiti Coasters, I’m horrified at the nonsense that goes in at our Council meetings,” Mr Burns said today. “The latest fiasco occurred when Council called Police to remove a member of the public from the Council chambers on Thursday 29 September because he wanted to record part of the Council meeting [see previous post].
“Council sessions are broadcast live on the Internet, and media representatives are often there with tape recorders, so it’s really unclear why such a big deal was made about this. It’s time for Councillors to be more accepting of public participation and embrace transparency.
“All too often, the focus of our Council is on how to keep the public out of decision-making, and how to dodge accountability. If I am elected this October, I pledge that I will to improve transparency and public participation in the work of Council.”

According to the Dominion Post report, Gavin Welsh has suddenly become the champion of the people. Since when? Since running for the mayoralty. He was not so generous with his sympathies when he tore the little Beau memorial down last December, or his role in gutlessly jumping on the bandwagon to defame me with false and serious allegations.
Many of us were fooled last elections into thinking that Ross Church would bring an open and ratepayer friendly approach to council, and the Rowan council soon ended up looking Utopian by comparison. The council needs a clean sweep of what Guru has often called the “inner core”. Welsh has been in the forefront of this council’s contempt for ratepayers, and based on his aversion to ratepayers’ use of the Code of Conduct when grievances cannot be settled decently , he cares nothing for transparency.
Guy Burns is standing against one of these “inner core”, and she – Janet Holbroow – whose word has been shown to be not worth a tuppenny-damn – well-deserves to be consigned to the dustbin of local politics. Good luck to Guy Burns.
Angela Buswell, a District-wide and mayoral candidate has described council meetings as a “circus” adding “they ought to sell tickets”. The tragedy is that the circus clowns have wasted an enormous amount of your Ratepayers’ money; it has to change and will if the right people are elected.
