Gus Evans, who runs the plant nursery in Utauta Street, featured in the DominionPost article this week over his close encounter with a large falling astelia hastata –- otherwise known as a perching lily — in the Wi Parata Reserve, which has caused the council to close it while they are removed.

Gus has also campaigned for a crossing of the railway line that doesn’t conflict with trains. And in 2015 he contributed a lot of plants to the beautification of the southern entrance to Waikanae around the railway bridge over SH1.
