Half the price of a 12-pack of beer will be made up of tax after the Government announced the second largest “beer tax” increase in 30 years.
Alcohol excise rates, which apply to domestically produced alcohol as well as duty on imported beer, wine and spirits, will increase by 6.6% on Saturday.
This hike follows a record 6.9% increase in 2022 and is expected to cost consumers an extra $86 million a year, including $28.9 million for beer drinkers alone.
This government is also bumping up taxes on petrol on Saturday.
And still the sheep will vote for to keep these numpties in power.
Wine is wonderful in some Islamic countries (I can testify to Turkey and Uzbekistan), but they get you with the taxes: a bottle of wine at a restaurant can cost far more than the food. I was looking forward to coming home to relatively cheap booze, but looks like NZ is going fundamentalist as well. I know there’s an argument for it, however it’s tempting to go back to Samarkand.
Perhaps stock up at the duty-free at the airport? Although they can be more expensive than the supermarket: they may be ‘duty-free’ but they’re certainly not profit-free.
Not bad for a Liebour Government that said pre-elections that there would be NO tax increases in their term. The workforce is getting taxed to death and those that live on a benefit still keep their hands out. TME FOR A CHANGE.
