Not sure that “Waikanae Watch” has the right understanding here. Firstly Russia massed military on Ukraine’s border under some pretext of an exercise before a full invasion of sending a fleet of Tanks down the road to Kiev. They got repulsed……..Oh dear, So sad.
Secondly, at a time of relative peace on the Middle East Hamas decided to send missiles onto Israel killing 1400 people and Waikanae Watch is surprised that Israel is fighting back. I do not like either situation very much, but unlike the Ukraine situation which is clearly an invasion for land, in the Israeli conflict there is always the chance that other actors like, Iran, Styria and possibly Lebanon, might “chance-there-arm” which could bring massive instability to the area. Waikanae Watch seems to be rather leftist, even communist, and certainly anti US in its attitude. Shame your correspondent conveniently forgets China’s Sabre rattling with blockades encircling Taiwan, or Putin’s attack on world food (Grain supplies) or persistently aiming weapons at civilian targets.
This is the standard Democratic Party line, You don’t happen to work in the American Consulate in Auckland by any chance? We have addressed the Ukraine issue many times over the last 20 months with posts by informed commentators from your country, the most insightful are those by Col. Douglas MacGregor and former US Marine/UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter. Caitlin Johnstone answers your version well and rather than try it in a few soundbites, we recommend you read them. Under your present commander in chief, US aid to Israel has suddenly jumped 5 times. In the past we were sympathetic to Israel but aren’t now. Look up the definition of “Libertarian” and you’ll see our ideology. We actually like your country and are sad to see it being wrecked by the Biden administration.
Hey, Foster ……………. you need to change your medication; because what you are taking now has you up a creek without a paddle when it comes to your understanding of the happenings in Palestine/Israel and Russia /Ukraine.
You obviously are a full blown believer in, and follower of, the msm.
Wake up, get a life, and do some real reading.
Michael Foster: It’s not that simple. While most people have instinctive sympathies one way or another, some of us are trying to get our heads round the facts. It’s not clear:
1) Who is ultimately responsible for the attack on Israel. The whole scenario is impossible: that one of the world’s most heavily guarded borders, controlled by one of the world’s most sophisticated armies, should be breached 15 times, and no response to the breach or calls for help for 6 hours.
The ugliest scenario is that the Hamas leadership, living the good life in Qatar, were in cahoots with Israel to provide an excuse to ethnically cleanse Gaza and/or wipe out Iran, with absolutely no concern for loss of life. Certainly some Israelis believe their government was involved, “we were a sacrifice”- I feel deeply sorry for them.
2) What actually happened in that attack, and in subsequent events like the explosion at Al-Ahli hospital. On 23 October, Haaretz released information on 683 Israelis killed during the Hamas-led offensive, including their names and locations of their deaths on 7 October. Almost half were Israeli soldiers and police officers. Claims of babies butchered and women raped appear to be fabrications.
As for the hospital … Well something happened, Israel had ordered 22 hospitals to evacuate, is bombing everything else, has form for lying, but you can’t assume Gaza authorities are factual either. I’ve gone about 315 degrees on this, having deleted from facebook an early report. I posted.
