As of 1 February new rules for road transport are:
1. A weight increase from 44 tonnes to 46 tonnes for 8 axle combinations
2. A height gain from 4.25 metres to 4.3 metres
3. A width increase from 2.5 metres to 2.55 metres
Clearly, the opening of the Expressway is coming at the right time for Kapiti people, so they can avoid all this if they stick to the old SH1, and it won’t be going through the Main Road of Waikanae!
Incidentally, that 46 tonnes is about 10 tonnes more than the truck weight limit on Interstate highways in the USA (80,000 pounds).
Good morning! My cycling husband has just commented that the stretch of expressway between Kapiti Road and Waikanae (built on sand) is already starting to form ridges between the tracks made by these huge trucks, with sand leaching up…..the trucks are too big for our roads.
