John Reid on Film-maker John O’Shea

By Jennifer Ramshaw

In common with so many groups, Friends of Kapiti Coast Libraries has been hit by Covid closures. However, the August speaker, John Reid, was detained by that other scourge, violent weather, that caused his return to Wellington.

It’s good to announce that he will be back to speak about his remarkable book, Whatever it Takes, a tribute to John O’Shea’s contribution to New Zealand’s film industry.

 The event will be held

  • at Ocean Road Community Centre (Paraparaumu Beach)
  •  at 2 pm
  • on 3 October.

These days we are accustomed to count the annual Kiwi Oscars, and in Kapiti to love the Maoriland Festival and the work of Linda Niccol. When O’Shea’s work began the industry could be summed up in one name, Rudall Hayward, and one institution, National Film Unit. It took huge battles with bureaucracy for O’Shea’s Pacific Films to make Broken Barrier, Don’t Let it get You, Tangata Whenua, Sons for the Return Home, Leave all Fair, Ngati and innumerable contract jobs – road safety, water safety, commercials. In the absence of a film school, Pacific Films developed the talents of Gaylene Preston, Michael Seresin and Barry Barclay among any others.

John Reid is himself an accomplished director of, among others, Middle Age Spread and Leave All Fair.  His biography of O’Shea and Pacific Films has been described as ‘superb’ and ‘an epic tale’. The opportunity to hear this hero of New Zealand film describe how he wrote the history of his mentor is not to be missed.

He will speak at Ocean Road Community Centre, where “social distancing” can be assured.

Whatever it Takes: Pacific Films 1948-2000 – the life and work of John O’Shea, Ocean Road Community Centre, 2 p.m. Sunday 3 October

another attempt to stop the Guru Gateway at tomorrow’s Council meeting

29 Wednesday Sep 2021

from Cr Gwynn Compton

For this week’s upcoming Council meeting, myself and Councillors Jocelyn Prvanov, Bernie Randall, and Martin Halliday have lodged a notice of motion about the Kāpiti Gateway Te Uruhi project. We’re asking for two reports — one updating Council on the current situation with Te Uruhi and with options on pausing any further work beyond the stream work currently taking place until Council can receive, consider, and respond to the independent review of Te Uruhi once it’s completed, and a second report — after having received the independent review — with options for Council to allow us to reconsider whether to proceed any further with the project.

We’re also asking for these reports to be received and considered by Council before any contracts are awarded for the construction of physical buildings on the site.

Tune into the Council meeting on Thursday from 9:30am at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/meetings

Meantime, work is proceeding at the site:

The parking lot is fenced off for the works.
Trees being removed. (Guy Burns pics from the last 48 hours)

Four Councilor votes for the motion is obviously not a majority. Cr Elliott could switch sides from comments she has made lately, but we don’t think any of the others will, which unfortunately means a 6-5 defeat. —Eds

Pfizer Boss: life ain’t getting back to normal for those who don’t take our jab

The CEO of the pharmaceutical giant Pfizer says that normal life will return within a year, but not for those who don’t have regular Cv vaccinations.

During an appearance on ABC This Week with George Stephanapoulos, Albert Bourla was asked about when he foresaw the end of the pandemic.

“Within a year, I think we will be able to come back to normal life,” said Bourla, although he made it very clear that this statement only applies to those who are prepared to take regular coronavirus booster shots.

“I don’t think that this means that variants will not be continuing coming,” Bourla added. “And I don’t think that this means that we should be able to live our lives without having vaccinations, basically.”

Bourla said that the “most likely scenario” was “annual re-vaccinations” due to the emergence of “new variants.”

Pfizer recalling all stocks of its anti-smoking drug Chantix after it was found to contain high levels of chemical that can cause cancer

29 Wednesday Sep 2021

Pfizer has recalled its popular anti-smoking drug Chantix after it was found to contain high levels of cancer-causing agents called nitrosamines.

According to a notice posted on the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website Thursday, the drug maker is ‘voluntarily recalling all lots of Chantix 0.5mg and 1mg tablets to the patient level due to the presence of a nitrosamine, N-nitroso-varenicline (NDMA), at or above the FDA interim acceptable intake limit’.

Then, in an update posted on Friday, the FDA advised ‘patients taking recalled varenicline to continue taking their current medicine until their pharmacist provides a replacement or their doctor prescribes a different treatment’.

It will be particularly effective if a Jacinda Party logo is put on the forehead. It’s hard to say how Jacinanistas will react to this, but it should cause reactions! 🙂 Available here

despite her Propagandists’ best efforts, the Jacinda government slips in the opinion polls

28 Tuesday Sep 2021

“Between September 22-26, 2021, 1001 eligible voters were polled by mobile phone (501) and online (500). The maximum sampling error is approximately ±3.1%-points at the 95% confidence level. For party support, percentages have been rounded up or down to whole numbers. The data has been weighted to align with Stats NZ population counts for age, gender, region and ethnic identification. The sample for mobile phones is selected by random dialling using probability sampling, and the online sample is collected using an online panel.” –TV One website.

TV One is of course a dedicated promoter of the Jacinda government, as are TV3, RNZ, NZME and Stuff which is what they (and several others, see Monday’s post) have been paid by her government from Taxpayers’ money to do. Jacinda & Co. should be pleased. One might have expected that with all her failures and unacceptable policies, her support would be much lower — and it likely would have been if these media organisations weren’t so biased.

We’ve seen other polls which show her party support lower at 38%, but the margin of error plus fickleness accounts for such differences.

What is particularly interesting and not shown in the Colmar Brunton results, however, is that there is a big gender difference. A Curia poll we were sent by the Taxpayers Union a couple of weeks ago showed that support for the Jacinda government among women is about 60% higher than among men. For ACT the gender difference is huge: 9% among women and 22% among men.
