A pair of coupled Silver Ferns south of Waikanae town in the background (the old station is just visible) captured in December 1983. These operated the daylight passenger service to and from Auckland from the end of 1972 until December 1991 with the replacement of the Silver Fern by the locomotive-hauled Overlander, which still operates, revamped, as the Northern Explorer.
