
Retail spending falls in June 2023 quarter – Media release

The total volume of retail sales fell 1.0 percent in the June 2023 quarter, according to figures released by Stats NZ today. This comes after falls of 1.6 percent and 1.1 percent in the March 2023 and December 2022 quarters respectively, after adjusting for price and seasonal effects.
Eleven of the 15 retail industries had lower sales volumes in the June 2023 quarter compared with the March 2023 quarter.
The largest contributors to the fall in the June 2023 quarter were food and beverage services, down 4.4 percent, and hardware, building, and garden supplies, down 4.8 percent.
