The small park opposite the dairy in Raumati South village, Poplar Avenue, was officially named Leon Kiel Reserve in a ceremony in March.

Leon (1959–2009) was a leading environmentalist, musician and mentor who was passionate about Raumati South. He was also a highly respected stonemason who built many lasting structures on the Kapiti Coast

There was live music until 10 pm from friends and family and anyone who remembered Leon came to just enjoy another great Raumati South community event.

Regular readers know that Leon Kiel built the lovely stone decorative wall on Waikanae’s Main Road which lasted until early 2022 when KCDC’s Sean Mallon and the NZTA decided to demolish it and replace it with the present controversial yellow bollards. See this post, among others. —Eds
